Menstrual underwear: a long-lasting investment for your comfort and your wallet.
But for your menstrual underwear or swimwear to last for years, good care is essential. How do you wash them without damaging the absorbent layers? What should you do before using them for the first time? And what to do if you notice a stain? In this comprehensive guide, we share everything you need to know to keep your menstrual underwear in perfect condition. From simple washing tips to dealing with discoloration, this guide will help you keep your panties fresh, functional and ready for every cycle.
Washing: the basic rules
Washing your menstrual panties is easier than you think, but there are a few golden rules to maximize their life and performance. Follow these steps and your panties will stay as good as new.
Step 1: Rinse first with cold water
After use, it's important to rinse your panties as quickly as possible in cold water. This removes blood and other discharges before they become embedded in the fabric. Hold them under running water until the water runs clear, or leave them to soak for a few minutes in a basin of cold water. Why cold? Hot water can "fix" blood proteins in the fabric, making stains harder to remove.
Tip: On the go? Place the panties in an airtight wash bag and rinse them later. Your bag will stay clean and fresh.
Step 2: Machine wash at 40°C maximum
After rinsing, you can machine wash your underwear on a gentle cycle at 40°C maximum. Use a mild, unscented detergent to avoid irritation and protect the absorbent layers. Avoid aggressive products such as fabric softener, bleach or vinegar, which can damage waterproofing and absorbency.
For added protection, wash your menstrual underwear in a washing net. This prevents them from becoming tangled or damaged by zippers or buttons. Wash them with your usual laundry (underwear, towels), but avoid overloading the machine.
Step 3: Air-dry
Always air-dry your panties, for example on a drying rack. This protects the elastic and the waterproof layer, which are sensitive to high temperatures. If you still use a tumble dryer, choose a gentle program and avoid hot air.
Why avoid heat? High temperatures can damage the waterproof layer (PUL), reducing the seal. Air-drying is better for your panties... and for the planet.

No washing machine available? Dissolve half a wipe in water, wash your panties by hand, rinse and leave to dry.
First use: prepare your panties
A new pair of menstrual panties is a gift... but before wearing them, there's an essential step to take.
Why pre-wash?
You need to wash your pants twice before wearing them, to "activate" the absorbent layers. This increases their absorption capacity, a bit like a new towel that dries better after a few washes.
What to do?
-
First wash: hand wash in cold water or machine wash at 40°C max with a mild detergent. No fabric softener.
-
Air dry completely.
-
Second wash and dry in the same way.
After this step, the panty is ready to wear and guarantees optimum protection.
And for swimwear? Same principle! Wash them twice before diving in. After each swim, rinse them in cold water to remove chlorine and salt.
Preventing and treating stains
Discoloration can happen, especially if you can't rinse immediately. Don't panic: this does not affect the hygiene or effectiveness of your panties.
Prevention:
Always rinse with cold water as soon as possible. If necessary, leave to soak for half an hour.
If a stain persists :
-
Soak for several hours in cold water with a little mild detergent.
-
Use an enzymatic stain remover suitable for delicate textiles (test on a small area first).
-
Avoid heat, which will set the stain.
Note that slight discoloration is normal after intensive use. It's proof that your panties are working for you.
